Chapter Fourteen
After Aliceâs call, I phoned my parents to warn them that reporters might turn up at their house, a prospect that left my mother gasping and my father spitting mad.
Since there was nothing we could do to make the situation any better, we ordered dinner at the agency and I ate at my desk, Solomon pulling Delgadoâs desk chair to sit on the other side.
âDinner for two. I feel guilty enjoying this in peace and quiet while my family are being harassed,â I said.
âIf it makes you feel any better, someone will get around to our house soon.â Solomon held out his fries and I took a couple. Then I offered him fries from my container. He smiled and took a couple, licking the salt from his fingers.
âSorry, but that doesnât make me feel better,â I decided with a dejected sigh.
âWe should turn one of the interview rooms into a bedroom for events like this. It wouldnât take much to remove the table and chairs and add a bed. Thereâs already a bathroom and kitchen. Someone could stay here indefinitely, with a guard if necessary. Iâm surprised I havenât thought of it before.â
âItâs a good idea. Not for someone whoâs wanted by the police, the agency isnât safe enough for that, but definitely for us, or any of the other employees.â
âI donât want to encourage working all hours but I think a bunk could be useful for that too.â
I reached for my water bottle and drank a gulp. âSomething to plan when this case is over.â
âI donât see much planning. Just the basics. Bed, mattress, bedding.â
âBut nice,â I insisted.
âI was just thinking clean.â
âMaybe some wallpaper.â
âIâm not sure anyone would appreciate that.â
âPeople donât notice their surroundings when the things are nice. They only notice them when theyâre not. How do you feel about throw pillows?â
âAmbivalent.â
I rolled my eyes. âIâll make a list.â
âIâll give you a budget.â
I reached out my hand. âDeal,â I said and we shook on it.
I finished my fries and checked my watch, which was ridiculous because I was hardly going to clock out while there was still work to be done. âIâm trying to find an âinâ with Tom Victorâs girlfriend,â I said. âAt the very least, I hope to get some more information about her.â
âLetâs get to it, then, and go home. There wonât be much more we can do for Daniel tonight and we both need the rest. Itâs been a long day and Iâve seen you wincing and holding your ribs when you think Iâm not looking.â
âIâm a little bruised,â I admitted as I finished the last of my food and wiped my hands on a napkin. âWhat if itâs not enough?â I asked. âWhat if we canât find what we need to exonerate Daniel? It was bad enough when the whole police department were out looking for him. Now his face will be plastered across the news.â
âWe still keep going. We havenât discovered everything yet.â Solomon reached his hand across my desk and I lay my hand in his.
